A Grateful Reminder: The Joy of Long-Term Healing

Yesterday, I got a call that made me pause. It was from the son of a patient I operated on eight years ago.
She had come to me for laparoscopic fundoplication—a procedure to help with severe acid reflux due to hiatus hernia a weakness in the valve which controls our acid reflux.
We met for a cup of coffee when Mr. Jalaj Rajput was in Pune for his work visit. When he told her he was visiting Pune, the mother asked him to stop by and meet me—not for a consultation or follow-up—but to give me her blessings.
She wanted him to let me know she’s doing perfectly fine.
And it feels so good.
We doctors are also humans. We feel nice when our happy patients tell us that they are doing fine even after so many years.
In surgery what’s most important is long term outcome and not the short term kick.
These ‘Thank You’ and ‘Blessings’ are the kinds of gifts that mean so much to me.
Feeling gratitude.
